Agri-business Academy

General Information

INTRODUCTION

The Littlerock High School Agribusiness Academy will give students training in the area of agribusiness.  Most of the jobs/careers in the agriculture industry are sales and/or service types of jobs.  This type of training will allow students to use their training in any of the six strands of agriculture.  Those six strands include Plant & Soil Science, Animal Science, Ornamental Horticulture, Natural Resources & Forestry, Agricultural Mechanics and Agribusiness.  As currently designed, the sequence of agriculture courses at Littlerock High School will easily lend themselves to the academy approach.

RATIONALE

Agriculture and agribusiness continue to be the industry with the largest impact on California's economy.  There are over 23 million jobs in the USA related to agriculture and agribusiness.  California alone produces more than 250 commodities that are scientifically grown, processed, advertised, marketed and distributed by the agricultural work force.  Almost ten percent of today's professional jobs in agriculture and agribusiness go unfilled.  Students receiving training in the Agribusiness Academy will be more qualified to enter the job market, receive further training, or enter an institution of higher learning than their counterparts receiving the more traditional education at Littlerock High School.

AGRIBUSINESS ACADEMY VISION STATEMENT

Our vision is to provide students with an educational experience that will be beneficial to them whether they enter the job market directly out of high school, participate in advanced technical training, or attend an institution of higher learning for an advanced degree.  The Littlerock Agribusiness Academy staff and supporters believe that education centered on a career path will provide a more valuable learning experience for students.  Our vision is to provide students with an educational experience that will allow them to continue to be life-long learners.  The agriculture industry is the largest industry in the state of California and many jobs remain unfilled each year.  We believe that students who participate in the Agribusiness Academy will benefit in several areas, specifically, improved student grades, graduation rates, test scores, and attendance.

AGRIBUSINESS ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to provide an educational experience that will be more useful to our students once they leave Littlerock High School.  The academy staff and supporters will provide students with career guidance and planning and information related to colleges/universities and scholarships.  We will provide on-site job shadowing and internships for our continuing students.  We will provide a more thematic approach to much of the course work.  We will provide students with employability skills, work ethics training, training in use of current technology, business contacts, and an understanding of the basic principles of agribusiness.
